Why does my competitor outrank me on Google?

Usually because Google trusts them more, not because their site is better. For local searches Google weighs relevance, distance and prominence. Prominence comes from reviews, consistent listings and other sites mentioning you. A competitor with eighty reviews will often beat a better business with six.

It's a genuinely annoying position. You know your work's better, your customers agree, and yet there they are, sitting above you every time you search.

The reasons are usually pretty mundane. And mostly fixable.

Google isn't ranking quality. It's ranking signals.

Google can't tell whether your work is better. It ranks proxies instead. For local searches those are relevance, distance and prominence.

  • Relevance. How clearly your site and profile say what you do and where you do it. Specific beats vague, easily.
  • Distance. How close you are to the person searching, measured from them, not from the town they typed. You can't change this, which is why the third one matters so much.
  • Prominence. How well known and well referenced your business looks across the web. Reviews, citations, mentions, links. This is the one you can actually move.

The usual culprits

  • They've got more reviews. This is the big one and it isn't glamorous. Eighty reviews with a steady trickle of new ones beats a better business with six from 2022. Count and recency both matter.
  • Their details match everywhere. Same name, address and phone across every directory. If yours show up three slightly different ways, every variation waters down the signal.
  • Their Google Business Profile is actually filled in. Category chosen on purpose, services listed, photos added, questions answered. Most profiles are half empty. Half empty loses to complete.
  • Their site's faster. Speed is a ranking factor and a conversion factor. A slow site loses twice.
  • They've got more pages about what they do. A page per service beats one page listing all of them, because each page can be properly relevant to a specific search.
  • They've been online longer. Domain history and built-up references carry weight. That one takes time, not cleverness.

What it's probably not

  • They're paying Google. Ads are labelled and sit separately. Paid ads don't improve organic rankings.
  • Their site looks nicer. Design isn't a direct ranking factor. A dated site with strong signals routinely beats a beautiful one with none.
  • Some secret trick. Occasionally someone's doing something dodgy, and it's usually temporary. It's rarely the explanation and never a good plan.

How to tell which it is

Put yourself side by side and be honest. Their review count against yours. Their profile against yours. How many pages each of you has about that specific service. How fast each site loads.

The gap is usually obvious inside twenty minutes. Usually it's reviews.

The good news

At local scale these gaps are small. Overtaking a national competitor takes years. Overtaking the firm in the next town usually means thirty more genuine reviews, a properly finished profile, and a few pages that actually target what people search for.

That's exactly the work in our local SEO service.

The profile half of it is covered in more detail under Google Business Profile setup and optimisation.
