Google Business Profile Setup & Optimisation in Devon

Your Google Business Profile is the most valuable page you don’t own.

For most local businesses it gets more views than the website, and it is where the calls actually come from. We set it up properly, optimise it against your real competitors, and keep it working.

Your profile is doing more work than your homepage

When someone searches for a local service, the first thing they see is not a list of websites. It is a map with three businesses on it. Most people choose from those three, and many never scroll past them at all.

That means your Google Business Profile is frequently the first — and often the only — impression a customer forms of your business. It carries your rating, your photos, your opening hours, your phone number and a direct route to a booking, all before anyone has visited your site.

  • It is where the calls come from. Profile calls, direction requests and website clicks routinely outnumber organic visits for local service businesses.
  • It is free, and mostly unclaimed ground. A properly built profile beats a neglected one, and most local competitors have never gone beyond filling in the name and address.
  • It feeds AI answers too. Assistants recommending local businesses lean heavily on the same profile data, review sentiment and consistency signals.

It is the highest-return hour of work available to a local business, and almost nobody does it properly.

What a properly built profile actually involves

“Setting up” a profile takes ten minutes. Building one that outranks your competitors takes rather more, because almost every field is a ranking signal and most of them are left empty.

  • Primary category. The single strongest lever on the whole profile, and the one most businesses choose once, wrongly, and never revisit. Secondary categories then broaden reach without diluting it.
  • Services and products. Every service listed, described and priced where sensible. This is indexed content that most competitors leave blank.
  • Business description and attributes. Written for how customers search rather than how you describe yourself internally, with the attributes that matter to your trade.
  • Photographs, properly. Real, geotagged, regularly added. Profiles with active photography see materially more engagement than those with a logo and nothing else.
  • Posts and offers. A live profile signals an active business. A dormant one signals the opposite.
  • Questions and answers. Seeded with the questions customers genuinely ask, answered properly, before a competitor or a stranger answers for you.
  • Service area or address. Configured correctly for how you actually trade — the wrong choice here can get a profile suspended.

Reviews are the difference, and they don’t arrive by accident

Reviews are the clearest prominence signal Google has, they are the first thing a customer reads, and they are increasingly what AI assistants summarise when recommending a business. They are also the thing almost every good local business neglects, because asking feels awkward.

The businesses with two hundred reviews are rarely two hundred times better. They have a system, and the system is usually one sentence at the right moment plus a link that makes it easy.

  • Steady beats sudden. A consistent trickle reads as an active business. A burst of forty in a week reads as something bought.
  • Replies are public content. Every response is indexed, demonstrates care to the next reader, and is another chance to be relevant.
  • Negative reviews are survivable. A calm, specific reply to a bad review persuades more people than a flawless five-star average, which many readers quietly distrust.

Reviews also feed AI recommendations directly — see how Techii became the AI-recommended repair shop in their area.

    Paul Matthews Competition Website
  • I gave Chris a few ideas of how I wanted my website to look, and after discussing themes, colours, templates, etc, Chris was left to his own devices. Once complete Chris showed me how to input the data, pictures and frames and a few other technical things. If I had a problem or wanted something tweaking I'd drop him an email or call. I was quoted a couple of thousand pounds for a similar website, Chris's fees are very reasonable in comparison and would recommend him.

  • Amazing and thorough service with maximum support and great pricing. Would recommend Chris as an excellent web designer. He listened to what I needed and interpreted my ungeeky descriptions to create a fantastic site which I can easily update. Brilliant after service and easy to follow "idiots guide" — just what I needed.

Google Business Profile FAQs

Google Business Profile questions, answered

  • Is Google Business Profile setup free?

The profile itself is free — Google does not charge for a listing, and you should be wary of anyone implying otherwise. What we charge for is the work: competitor research, category strategy, services and description, photography guidance, Q&A seeding, citation consistency and the review system.

We review your existing profile free of charge as part of a discovery call, and tell you honestly whether it needs work or is already fine.

  • I already have a profile. Do I need this?

Possibly not — and we will say so if it is in good shape. But most profiles we see have a suboptimal primary category, empty services, no products, no Q&A, a handful of photos and no review system. Each of those is a ranking signal left on the floor.

The profile existing is the starting line. Almost all the value is in what comes after.

  • Should I show my address if I work from home?

No. If you travel to customers you should be configured as a service-area business with the address hidden — Google supports this explicitly, and publishing a home address you do not trade from risks suspension.

This matters especially in rural Devon, where it is the most common and costly setup error we see. More on that in our Mid Devon local SEO page.

  • My profile has been suspended. Can you help?

Usually, yes. Suspensions typically follow an address or category problem, a keyword-stuffed business name, or a change that tripped a review. The fix is to correct the underlying cause and appeal with evidence rather than simply resubmitting.

We will tell you up front how recoverable it looks — some cases are straightforward, and some need a rebuild.

  • How do I get more reviews without being annoying?

Ask once, at the moment the customer is most pleased, and make it a single tap. That is genuinely most of it. The businesses that struggle are usually asking too late, asking by email only, or sending people to a page that requires hunting for the review button.

We set up the link, the wording and the timing, then leave you with something repeatable rather than a campaign that stops when we do.

  • How long until I appear in the map pack?

Profile optimisation is one of the faster-moving parts of local search. Visibility often shifts within four to eight weeks because Google can re-evaluate these signals quickly.

Competitive town-level positions take longer and depend on review volume and citations, which build over three to six months.

  • How does this fit with your local SEO service?

Your profile is one component of local SEO, alongside your website, citations, reviews and content. This page exists because the profile is substantial enough to be worth doing on its own, and for many businesses it is the fastest place to start.

Plenty of clients begin here, see movement, and take on the wider work afterwards. That is a perfectly sensible order.
